Foster Children's Adoption Project

Case Profile 1

The Department of Children and Family Services placed two brothers in foster care. The boys' mother was a heroin addict. One brother was physically abused and has repeated seizures, while the other child has been hospitalized several times with pneumonia. After parental rights had been terminated, the boys' foster parents volunteered to adopt them. For over two years, the Department failed to complete the necessary paperwork to allow the children's adoptions to be finalized, and the boys languished in foster care unnecessarily. Once the case was referred to The Alliance, we were able to resolve the Department's delays and complete both boys' adoptions in two months.

Case Profile 2

The Alliance completed the adoption of a 13-year-old boy who had been cared for by his grandparents since he was six months old. The boy has severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and his grandparents had been trying to adopt him for 11 years. During that time, Los Angeles County had assigned 14 different social workers to handle the boy's case and repeatedly refused to accept home studies completed in Hawaii where the boy's grandparents had taken up residency. The Alliance obtained a special counselor to help the boy with his educational disability. We finalized the boy's adoption within a few months.
